Appian (Appianus) used to be a Greek authentic of Alexandria. Bathsheba舗s initial 舠seduction舡 by Troy during his sword exercise occurs in an outdoor setting comparable to the one where she spends the night after her relationship with her husband has been destroyed. So, too, Troy舗s expert performance of the sword exercise for Bathsheba anticipates his later circus performance as the daring highwayman Dick Turpin. The scene of innocent drinking and storytelling at Warren舗s Malthouse early in the novel parallels a later, more irresponsible scene of drinking at the Buck舗s Head Inn舒just as the innocent shearing supper is followed by the decadent harvest supper.

1895 Jude the Obscure is serialized in bowdlerized form in Harper舗s New Monthly Magazine, but is restored to its original form for book publication. The novel precipitates harsh attacks for its alleged pessimism and immorality. The first collected edition of Hardy舗s writings is published. Hardy turns to the writing of poetry. 1898 Wessex Poems, Hardy舗s first volume of poetry, is published. 1904 Hardy舗s mother dies. The first part of The Dynasts, an epic poetic drama on the Napoleonic Wars, is published, with two more parts appearing over the next three years.
